Equivalent Fractions In Your Virtual Classroom
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! No, not spring break … equivalent fractions time!
It’s hard to think of a math concept more important than equivalent fractions for upper elementary school students. It can be a tough concept for kids to understand, especially if they are rushed through a unit or two on it without allowing enough time for exploration… made even more difficult (but not impossible!) this year with virtual and hybrid learning.
I want to share with you a few resources that will help you successfully teach this concept to your virtual classroom students without a lot of additional prep time.
Make It Into A Game
Students tend to be way more interested in concepts if we can make it into a game! They’ll be having so much fun, they won’t realize how much they’re learning!
Here are some great places to find games on this topic:
- Equivalent Fraction Bingo
- Equivalent Fraction Space Game
- & while not technically a “game”, this website offers great online Equivalent Fractions Practice
These are a great thing to add to centers time, also!
Sing About Equivalent Fractions
Equivalent fractions will be easy to understand with these songs! Plus, it’s a great way to get kids out of their chairs to move their bodies for a few minutes!
- Numberock has a few great songs like this one or this one
- Rock 2 the Core
- Fraction Dog Song
- Fractions on a Number Line
Manipulatives
Manipulatives are one of the most concrete learning methods for this important math concept. Lucky for us, there are so many options for virtual manipulatives!
My go-to place this is toy theater where you can find basically every math manipulative you can think of to use virtually. The number line and fraction strips are great options.
Speaking of number line … this is such an important piece of learning this math concept, I have a whole other blog post dedicated to this topic! Check it out here!
Equivalent Fractions in Google Classroom
We know that children learn best when they are interested and engaged.
Using Google Classroom is an easy way to engage your students when it comes to learning about equivalent fractions. Using customizable Google slide activities like these in my TPT store is a great way to add to your lesson plan!
My goal is to provide value to you as we navigate the virtual classroom this year, so if you need more fractions help, check out my guide on 5 Equivalent Fractions Hacks.
